The Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Graduate Program is organized around a formal course requirement. There are four required Core Courses and four courses to be chosen from a list of Elective fields. Generally, Core Curriculum classes are completed within the first year, and Elective requirements are completed within the second year. All required and elective courses for the degree must be taken for a letter grade. Students must obtain a “B” or better in courses taken for the degree.
The Core Curriculum ensures that every student within the Program has the same knowledge basis in key areas of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology. The Electives are intended to provide students with in-depth courses related to their own research interests. However, at least one course must be chosen from a Biology field (Elective fields 1, 2, 3, 8 and one from a Computer Science/Engineering field (Elective fields 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). Students of the Biomedical Informatics Track will take at least 2 electives from the Medical Informatics field (9).
In addition, students must also take
- The Colloquium (BNFO 281) for first and second years, consisting of (i) the Student Research Talks in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters, and (ii) the Frontiers in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Seminar Series in Fall and Winter quarters.
- One of two Ethics courses (SOMI 226 or BIOM 219) in the Spring quarter of the first year.
- The Research Rotation requirement (BNFO 298 for 4 units) in the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters of the first year.
It is the general policy of the program to be as adaptable as possible to the needs of the individual student. The curriculum committee is receptive to students petitioning to satisfy an Elective requirement by taking a course not listed among the Electives.
