There is enormous demand from academia, industry, and government for trained professionals in bioinformatics and biomedical informatics. Academic institutions in health sciences, the healthcare industry, and government institutions are seeking highly skilled individuals who can manage and analyze large amounts of data, and who can connect discoveries at different biological scales (from molecular to individual to population levels).
A report from the Working Group on Data and Informatics to the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director recognized the shortage of biomedical scientists with appropriate computing expertise and called for strong NIH support of cross-disciplinary education and training.
