Research Rotations

Transitional policies for students entering 2008 or earlier

  • Students who entered Fall 2007 should complete their 3 rotations by the end (summer quarter) of their second year.
  • Students who entered Fall 2008 should complete their 3 rotations by the end of winter quarter of their second year.
  • Students entering Fall 2009 or later should complete their 3 rotations by the end (summer quarter) of their first year. Their first year looks like this:
    • Fall: contact faculty to make rotation plans.
    • Winter: 1st rotation.
    • Spring: 2nd rotation.
    • Summer: 3rd rotation.

Research Rotations

Each student in the graduate program will undertake three quarter-long (ten weeks) long research rotations in three different laboratories within the first calendar year. The purpose of the research rotations is to train students in specific research methodologies, and identify a laboratory in which to pursue doctoral thesis research.

Typically, students will use their first quarter (Fall of first year) to contact faculty and make a rotation plan. Then they will complete the three rotation requirement within the first year by undertaking research rotations in the Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters/sessions of their first year.

For each rotation project, a one-page summary, signed by student and rotation mentor, must be submitted to the Program Coordinator by the last day of the previous quarter. At the completion of the ten-week rotation, a five-page report, signed by student and rotation mentor, summarizing the work, results and conclusions, are to be submitted to the Program Coordinator by the first day of the following quarter.

All students, regardless of their background and elective track, are expected to identify a thesis research laboratory and join that laboratory by the beginning (Fall quarter) of their second year. However, all students may petition the curriculum Committee to undertake additional rotations.
